Squirrel Facts - Ground and Tree Squirrels
Squirrels
There are three basic kinds of squirrels. The Ground Squirrel, the Tree Squirrels and the Flying Squirrels.
I will give a brief description of each of these kinds of squirrels and the habitats in which they live.
The Ground Squirrel
There are at least 9 varieties of Ground Squirrels. They populate most of the United States. Each species have their own preference as to where they live. They do however have many things in common.
They live in burrows under the ground, as close to their food source as possible. They are not picky eaters and the different species will eat anything from nuts, plants, fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts.
There are a couple of species the Franklin ground squirrel and the Thirteen Lined ground squirrel that will eat grasshoppers, insects and small animals when available. The Thirteen Lined ground squirrel is often mistaken for a chipmunk or a gopher. These squirrels will eat just about anything they can catch, such as insects, mice, earthworms, small birds, and even other Thirteen Lined squirrels.
The size of ground squirrels vary greatly from approximately 6 to 12 inches total length for the smaller species such as the Thirteen Lined ground squirrel to 16 to 19 inches total length for the larger species such as the California ground squirrel.
